PAUL TERRY GIVES HIS VIEWS ON UPCOMING SHREWSBURY TOWN CLASH
OMAR BECKLES LOOKS AHEAD TO SHREWSBURY TOWN FIXTURE
SHREWSBURY TOWN
Shrewsbury have had a mixed start to their 2023/24 league campaign, with three wins and four losses in their first seven games. Having finished last season in 12th place, they will hope to push higher up the table for this season.
The Shrews have fallen to defeat at the hands of Stevenage, Lincoln City, Carlisle and most recently Bristol Rovers. They have, however, beaten the likes of Cheltenham, Burton Albion, and Fleetwood.
Matt Taylor is at the helm for Shrewsbury Town. Taylor may be known for his playing career at the likes of Portsmouth, Bolton, and West Ham but this is only his second permanent job in his managerial career. He was head coach of Tottenham U18 before his appointment at Walsall following the departure of Brian Dutton in May of 2021. In this first half of the 2021/22 season, he had Walsall pushing for a play-off place after being unbeaten in October of that season, but after the turn of the year, he was relieved of his duties following seven defeats in a row. Taylor was appointed head coach of Shrewsbury Town on the 26th of June 2023.
Saturday’s fixture will be the 55th meeting between the two sides, with Leyton Orient taking 25 victories in this fixture. Shrewsbury has managed 20 victories with 9 games being drawn. The last time these two sides met was on the 7th of January 2014 when Orient won 2-0 away from home.
REFEREE
Lewis Smith has been selected as the match referee for this afternoon’s clash between the O’s and Salop.
The official is in his first full season as an EFL referee having been promoted at the end of last, although he had experience 2022/23 of refereeing in the Championship, League One and League Two.
So far this campaign, Smith has taken charge of nine fixtures, with four in League One, three in League Two, and two in the EFL Cup. In his nine fixtures, he has shown 39 yellow cards, and pointed to the penalty spot on two occasions.
Today’s fixture at Brisbane Road will be the first time that Smith has officiated either the O’s or Salop.
Smith will be assisted by Damith Bandara and Marc Wilson, with Ryan Whitaker scheduled to be the Fourth Official.
